The Mother of All Hoods is the thirty-third episode of The Mask: The Animated Series.

Summary[]

After being humiliated by The Mask on a police reality show, Lieutenant Kellaway tries to prove to the Edge City police force (and his visiting mother) that he is a competent police detective by going on a stakeout to uncover plans of The Hood to have Mayor Tilton kidnapped.

Plot[]

The TV show Flatfoot Patrol is recording live on Edge City, with Kellaway and Doyle serving as its latest episode's focus. They attempt to foil a robbery at a restaurant, but the Mask inadvertently allows the criminals Kellaway and Doyle have been chasing to escape, while the cops get wedgies for their troubles. The incident gets caught on live TV and Kellaway becomes a laughingstock among his fellow cops at the precinct. Suddenly, Mayor Tilton introduces a new department chief, Lawrence Lorenzo, who tasks the cops with capturing a new criminal known simply as "the Hood".

Lorenzo chooses Kellaway to spearhead the investigation, but other cops, including Doyle, are concerned that Kellaway won't be able to do his job properly because he is too obsessed with the Mask. Even when Kellaway insists he is fine, he gets an unexpected visit from his mother, who claims that Kellaway never calls her or writes to her. In fact, she says that, unlike his father, Kellaway has never caught a single criminal. Kellaway insists that he can't take his mother on a stakeout, for it's against police regulations, but Lorenzo allows her to go along for the ride, as she is already familiar with police procedures, much to the confusion of Mayor Tilton.

Frustrated, Kellaway begins his investigation, but not before warning Stanley not to let the Mask interfere. Unfortunately for Kellaway, when Stanley takes a bath, he ends up accidentally putting on the Mask when he confuses it for a towel and the Mask does interfere in the investigation, which itself is already difficult thanks to the incessant complaints from Kellaway's own mother. During the ensuing chaos, the Mask accidentally steals the Hood's plans for his next crime and, in the next morning, Stanley attempts to warn Kellaway about the Hood's incoming heist, but Kellaway ignores him.

Kellaway does agree to observe the Coco Bongo for any suspicious activity, but when Stanley attempts to infiltrate the Coco Bongo, he is stopped by the security guards and only gains access by putting on the Mask. Just as the Mask attempts to dance with Kellaway's mother, the Hood and his lackeys barge into the Coco Bongo and take Mayor Tilton and Kellaway's mother as hostages. With the Mask making a fool out of himself as usual, the Hood and his lackeys take their hostages to a factory that produces Cornito's Chips, the Mask's favorite snack. It's in that place that the Hood reveals that he is actually Lorenzo to the Mayor, and he is planning to kill the Mayor in order to take control of Edge City.

The Mask tracks the scent of Cornito's Chips to the factory, discovers the hostages and tries to warn Kellaway, who unsuccessfully tries to ignore him and ultimately decides to chase him, even if that means ignoring an order from Lorenzo to go to the harbor (which is actually an attempt by Lorenzo to cover his own escape). The police arrives at the Cornito's Chips factory, just in time for the Mask to save Mayor Tilton and apprehend the Hood's minions, while the Hood himself is confronted by Kellaway's mother, who angrily beats him up with her purse after discovering that he is actually Lorenzo. Kellaway's mother is awarded a medal for her help in capturing the Hood, while Kellaway is humiliated by the Mask yet again.

Notes[]

Continuity notes[]

  • The Mask is aware of that Kellaway is putting on a "ignore the Mask and he'll go away" routine, similar to the policy declared by Mayor Tilton in Goin' for the Green.

Continuity errors[]

  • In The Terrible Twos, Kellaway claims to have an older brother, but in this episode, his mother claims he is her only child.

References to other works of fiction[]

  • One of the female cops has a hairstyle similar to that of Princess Leia from Star Wars.
  • When the Mask attempts to guess Kellaway's first name, one of his guesses is "Rumpelstiltskin".
