Mask au Gratin is the twenty-second episode of The Mask: The Animated Series.

Summary[]

Stanley is hired to show Mrs. Peenman's niece Jennifer around Edge City during her visit there—and discovers that Mrs. Peenman's niece has an old amulet which transforms her by the moonlight turning into a monster named Gorgonzola who turns anything and everything into cheese.

Plot[]

Stanley gets a morning visit from Mrs. Peenman, who tells him that her niece Jennifer is visiting her, but unfortunately, Peenman can't look after her because she is busy, so she is forcing Stanley to take care of her to make up for not paying rent in time. Stanley thinks Jennifer will be as unbearable as Peenman herself, only to discover that Jennifer is a kind, patient young woman who works as an archeologist.

While sharing a meal at a restaurant, Jennifer shares some pictures of her work to Stanley. She even carries an amulet that used to belong to Gorgonzola, an evil witch from Mesopotamia, and explains that, according to legend, if the amulet gets removed from her tomb and then exposed to moonlight, Gorgonzola will be unleashed once again. Jennifer dismisses that legend as mere superstitions, but Stanley, having his own wacky experiences with the Mask, thinks this legend might be true.

Later that night, Jennifer begins feeling weak and Stanley runs to the convenience store and buy a bottle of water for her. Suddenly, Gorgonzola's amulet is exposed to moonlight and Gorgonzola possesses Jennifer's body and begins turning everyone she comes across into cheese as revenge for her imprisonment. The Mask is forced to intervene and proves immune to Gorgonzola's powers, but Gorgonzola escapes.

The next day, Stanley awakens on his bed and believes last night's events were just a dream, until he finds a pack of cheese on his bed and when he turns on the TV, a news report says that Gorgonzola caused trouble all over the city. Suddenly, Mrs. Peenman tells Stanley to take Jennifer to a date on the park and then to watch a football game tonight, or she will evict him.

Later that night, Stanley and Jennifer meet up at the park just in time for their date. Jennifer falls asleep and Stanley attemps to remove Gorgonzola's amulet, but the amulet is exposed to moonlight, which causes Gorgonzola to possess Jennifer's body again. Gorgonzola turns Stanley into a cheese statue before he can put on the Mask and steals his tickets for tonight's football match, seeing it as an opportunity to turn as many people into cheese as possible.

After Gorgonzola has left the park, two teenagers find the Mask and put it on Stanley's lifeless cheese form as a prank. Fortunately, the Mask still works even when Stanley has been reduced into cheese. Resurrected, the Mask speeds into Edge City Stadium, right when Gorgonzola has started to turn both the players, the announcers and even the audience into cheese statues.

The Mask reflects Gorgonzola's energy beams back to her and turns her into a cheese statue. Then, he takes her amulet and returns it to her tomb, an event that reverses her powers and turns all her victims back to normal, Jennifer included. An angry Mrs. Peenman barges into the stadium, looking for her niece, who doesn't have any recollections over what happened in these past few nights. She does, however, agrees to have breakfast with Stanley, who doesn't have any appetite for anything that includes cheese.
