The Mask is Always Greener on the Other Side Part 2 is the second episode of The Mask: The Animated Series.

Summary[]

After causing him nothing but trouble, Stanley Ipkiss gets rid of his mask by burying it in quick-drying cement, but must retrieve it to save Peggy and Milo after Pretorius tricks Stanley's friend and coworker, Charlie, into building a "house of tomorrow" and kidnaps them.

Plot[]

Picking up where the previous episode left off, Stanley tries to yank himself out of the cement as Walter approaches him, but a steel beam flies towards him and he grabs it, yanking himself out of the cement and hopping onto another beam where a construction worker eating his lunch tells him he's not allowed to be here, at which Stanley responds by asking him if he covers for life insurance as he sees Walter coming up on another beam and then hopping off onto the one Stanley is on. After scaring off the worker, Walter corners Stanley, who throws the worker's lunchbox at him, only for it to bounce off as the goliath nears, but he ends up stepping on a banana and falls all the way down onto the dried up cement. Stanley screams out in horror, apparently not wanting Walter dead, and goes down to inspect him, only to be relieved yet frustrated when Walter gets up. After dodging Walter's fist, Stanley digs into the spot where Walter landed and finally finds the mask just as Walter lifts him up. Stanley puts the mask on and transforms into his alter-ego The Mask, who then uses everything to defeat Walter, including dropping a piano on him, pulling a wedgie, then using his rubber duck to blow him up, but to his shock, even his powers are no match for the brute. The Mask (in his roman form) decides to fight Walter straight on, but changes his mind and instead buries Walter with cement instead.

Back at Pretorius' lab, Peggy and Milo are cornered by his henchmen until The Mask arrives dressed as a director and tricks them into posing, just as Peggy begins to take pictures before The Mask dispatches them. Pretorius grabs The Mask by the head and starts to yank it off while Peggy grabs The Mask by the ankles to pull him back and the two engage in a tug of war until Peggy lets go, sending The Mask crashing into Pretorius before placing the mad scientist in a dunk tank and throwing a ball at his head, detaching it from his body before The Mask escapes with Peggy and Milo, dropping an envelope on the way out. As Pretorius reattaches his head, he inspects the envelope, taking interest as his henchmen inform him of the trio's escape, which he dismisses as a minor setback.

Meanwhile, Stanley, having removed the mask, tries to cut it with a hacksaw only for the blade to break as he explains to Peggy what might happen if Pretorius gets his hands on it, despite Peggy's objections that Stanley's possession of the mask will benefit mankind. In another attempt to destroy the mask, he hits it with a crowbar, only for it to break in two and damage his watch in the process, which he inspects and, to his shock, sees it's 5 o'clock, meaning he's late for his meeting with Charlie at the House of Tomorrow as a result of Pretorius' interference, and he races off to his destination in the Loaner.

Later, having pushed the Loaner after it breaks down on the way, Stanley enters the House of Tomorrow, unaware that Pretorius (in his spider-like body) has followed him. As Stanley struggles to connect several wires while Charlie lazily reads over the instructions, Pretorius sneaks into the control room and finds the central nerve bank, where he hacks into the entire house and sets the robot maid and dog to attack Stanley and Charlie, who are able to escape and lock the robots in the room. Deciding to give the house another test run, Pretorius the entire building to sprout metallic spider-like legs before it goes on a rampage throughout Edge City. Putting his plan into motion, Pretorius blows up the Fire Department and calls the police while mimicking Charlie's voice, tricking them by saying The Mask is behind the attack.

As the house continues its rampage, Stanley attempts to put on the mask, but Pretorius notices and controls a set of robotic arms (which grab Charlie and rip his shirt off, revealing a corset underneath) into sending him and the mask down the laundry chute. When Stanley stops his fall, Pretorius gloats to him about his plan of framing him for the city's destruction going smoothly, and before Stanley can make a retort of his own, Pretorius pokes him in the hand and sends him falling deeper into the chute.

Meanwhile, Peggy and Milo are at a hot dog stand when they see the house passing by.

Back in the house, Stanley falls into the laundry room and retrieves the mask before putting it on. Charlie is chased by a robotic hedge trimmer, until The Mask arrives and trips it. After removing Charlie's corset and making fun of his overweight shape, he confronts the robot while dressed as a ninja before taking out a massive blaster and shooting it. A shocked Charlie asks if The Mask is actually Stanley, who responds by giving him a wedgie. Outside, Peggy and Milo hop on top of the house and enter. Back inside, The Mask and Charlie return to the room where the robot maid is still operating, and The Mask dispatches it with a mallet (while dressed as a maid). At that moment, Peggy takes more pictures, prompting the Mask to make several poses, until Pretorius sends more robot maids, which The Mask also dispatches while dressed as a Terminator-styled cyborg (complete with the Arnold Schwarzenneger accent). However, another robot hits him on the head with a frying pan, sending him crashing into the garage underneath the room, where Stanley's Loaner is stored. He enters the Loaner, which then transforms into a race car-styled vehicle with a smile decorated at the front before driving back into the room and turning the robot into a trashcan.

Outside, the police have set up a defense perimeter while aiming mortar launchers at the house and await Lt. Kellaway's next command, but Doyle seems unconvinced that The Mask is behind this. At that moment, The Mask crashes through the window in his Maskmobile, and Kellaway has him under arrest, but The Mask claims innocence (while showing him a picture of him dancing with Kellaway's wife Margaret).

In the control room, Milo discovers Pretorius' head and barks to get The Mask's attention., who is able to translate that Pretorius is controlling the house from the basement and sets out to stop him. Pretorius' body is launched from his lair and parachuted into the house, just as The Mask finally locates Pretorius' head in the control room.

In the city, Mayor Tilton unveils his new statue, unaware that Walter is still underneath the cement, who breaks free as the house walks over the crowd. At the house's roof, The Mask engages in a duel with Pretorius' body, stopping short when he notices the house heading for the Children's Hospital, which he is able to stop by tricking the house into stepping on a huge roller skate, causing it to swerve away from the building before he throws and parachutes Peggy and Charlie out of the house and then returning for Milo, who is in the middle of barking at Pretorius' head just as the house falls into Edge City Harbor.

Peggy, Kellaway and Doyle arrive to see Stanley emerge from the water unharmed, and Kellaway asks why no one ever sees him and The Mask at the same place at the same time. At that moment, Pretorius' head emerges from the water and prepares to kill Stanley, until Milo, wearing the mask, chases him into the sunset.

Afterwards, Peggy congratulates Stanley on his heroics, and Stanley states that while he did succeed in saving the Children's Hospital, he still vows to never wear the mask again. He will make sure it doesn't fall into evil hands but he will leave the heroics to the police from now on, only to change his mind when Milo returns with the mask. Charlie bemoans the loss of his dream of being bank president, but quickly recovers as he reminds Stanley of the envelope, which the latter retrieves from Pretorius' pocket as his body is being hauled away by Kellaway, who then orders a search for Pretorius' head, who just so happens to be under Kellaway's car and vowing revenge on Stanley as Kellaway drives off.

When Stanley asks Peggy about the mail pickup schedule, which is now, he decides to use the mask once more, and Milo trips Charlie into the harbor as Stanley transforms into The Mask, who ends the episode by saying his catchphrase, "SSSSMOKIN'!"
