Sister Mask is the fifth episode of The Mask: The Animated Series.

Summary[]

Pretorius creates a sister Mask that turns the real Mask into a living puppet in order to use him to steal meteorite fragments with unusual properties.

Plot[]

Stanley's date with an unseen woman is ruined after Walter attacks the Chinese restaurant they were attending. The Mask is forced to intervene, and Pretorious watches the confrontation from his secret base. Amazed by the Mask's ability to endure extreme amounts of physical damage, Pretorious devises a plan to capture him.

The next morning, Stanley complains that the Mask ruined yet another one of Stanley's dates but suddenly gets a call from Peggy, who tells him to get to Edge City's museum right away. Once there, they find an exhibit about masks and come across the "Sister Mask", which is similar to Stanley's own Mask. According to the exhibit's description, the Sister Mask needs to be used at the same time as the original Mask so that the wearer can achieve full control over it. Frustrated by the Mask's chaotic, unpredictable nature, Stanley sees this new Mask as a chance to be a real superhero, so he takes the Sister Mask at this apartment

Despite protests from both Peggy and Milo, Stanley puts on both Masks at the same time, but finds himself no different than he was back when he simply put on the original Mask, except for a small dot on his forehead. The dot is actually a transmitter that projects a hologram of Pretorious, who informs the Mask that he created the Sister Mask as part of his plan to control the Mask like a puppet and forces the Mask to kiss Mrs. Peenman to prove it. Stanley's attempts to remove the Masks are unsuccessful and Pretorious forces him to attack a military base and steal a mysterious meteor, but the Mask is able to keep collateral damage to a minimum.

Peggy and Milo follow the Mask to Pretorious' new laboratory. The Mask is forced to hand the meteor over to Pretorius, who explains that the meteor is actually one of four meteors, all of which can grant superpowers to their wearers, and wants to use the Mask to obtain them all in his quest for scientific knowledge. Milo distracts Pretorius and causes him to drop the remote he was using to control the Mask, giving Peggy the opportunity to remove both Masks and free Stanley from Pretorius' control.

As Pretorius' lackeys surround them, Stanley attempts to put on the real Mask but accidentally grabs the fake Mask, while Pretorius puts on the real Mask and accepts the fact that he is not driven by scientific curiosity, but by pure evil. Fortunately, Stanley forcibly attaches the Sister Mask to Pretorius and uses the remote to give Pretorius a taste of his own medicine. With Pretorius defeated, Peggy believes that Stanley wouldn't want to use the Mask again, but Stanley does indeed put on the Mask to continue tormenting Pretorius, who is helpless without his body.

Characters[]

Trivia[]

  • This episode shows that the mask (the artifact) is self-aware and alive as it is is aware that Stanley tried to control it with the sister mask, and shows that it doesn't by swatting a fly on the floor.

Notes[]

  • When Pretorius explains each of the powers of the meteorite fragments, he mentions that they were like the ones in the comics, which is a reference to The Fantastic Four, who has the powers of Fire, Earth, Stretching and Invisibility.
  • This episode shares similarities to The Tick episode, "The Tick vs. Mr. Mental".
    • Both feature the respective titular heroes at the mercy of a villain for their own personal gain.
    • The difference being that The Mask wasn't hypnotized into doing Pretorius's bidding like the Tick was by Mr. Mental and therefore, put up more of a fight against the latter.
