Mayor Mitchell Tilton is the mayor of Edge City.

The Mask (1994)[]

Mayor Mitchell Tilton is the just and respectable mayor of Edge City. He is only seen in the third and fourth quarters of the movie where he is attending a charity ball at the Coco Bongo during the night which is hosted by Niko and attended by the city's elite which includes him. He bears witness as Dorian Tyrell kills Niko while wearing the mask and is made a hostage along with Tina Carlyle as Tyrell intends to blow the establishment up with an assortment of dynamite. He then bears witness to when Tyrell loses the mask to Stanley Ipkiss and his dog Milo who utilize its power to deal with the dynamite, defeat the mobsters, and dispose of Tyrell with the club's ornamental fountain.

Just as the police arrive with the aid of Charlie Schumaker to arrest the remaining henchmen, Lt. Mitch Kellaway arrives to arrest Stanley along with them only for Mayor Tilton to intervene. Kellaway after colliding with him, at first insults Tilton; "Watch it, Chunky!", not recognizing him at first, but then backs off when a furious Tilton demands what he is doing. When Kellaway insists he is arresting the Mask, Tilton laughs it off claiming that Dorian Tyrell was the Mask and that he saw it with his own eyes. He then goes on the declare Stanley a hero who saved everyone which his friends attest to. As Stanley, Tina, and Charlie take their leave, Milo follows after them with the Mask in his mouth which Kellaway attempts to point at only for Tilton to tell him to "Leave the dog alone" (showing he knows Stanley is the real Mask and is covering for him out of gratitude for his heroics). Tilton then tells Kellaway that he wants to see him in his office in the morning as soon as possible which a frustrated and embarrassed Kellaway agrees to before walking away.

The Mask: The Animated Series[]

In the animated series, Mayor Mortimer Tilton is very loosely based off his film counterpart. He's portrayed as an egotistical and corrupt politician who is obsessed with keeping Edge City "fluffy" and constantly uses the city's budget for elaborate celebrations like parades and statues of himself. Though not evident in season one, season two reveals that Mayor Tilton is corrupt and self-aggrandizing. In Flight as a Feather, it is revealed that Mayor Tilton blew the entire budget of Edge City on a party for the city's beauty contest winners (to the point that the government offices have no money for basic office supplies) and once dated an exotic dancer named Cookie BaBoom, who crashes his Bavariaville ceremony and threatens to blow herself and the Mayor (to whom she refers as "Mortimer") with two megatons worth of dynamite strapped to her body (which The Mask strips off and makes into a cocktail) because he broke up with her.

Like Lt. Kellaway, he gets furiously annoyed at the Mask's antics when causing problems for him and the city; like turning statues of the mayor into ones of the Mask, including one of the mayor getting an atomic wedgie before giving him one, disrupting important celebrations or deals, or causing pie-throwing contests during city council meetings. But, sometimes he views the Mask as a hero when saving the city or him from any disasters or villains.

Despite his selfishness, Tilton is a person of genuine gratitude, visibly by the fact that he often thanks the Mask for saving the city and frees him from any legal trouble that he causes (much to Kellaway's chagrin). Also unlike Kellaway, he can be a lot more reasonable as he will admit the Mask saved his life along with anyone else's.

Tilton does put up a law that requires everyone to ignore The Mask which it works too well, as the Mask was trying to warn everyone about a swamp monster, but they continued to ignore him until it was almost too late, so Tilton agrees to get rid of that law after the Mask saves the day.

Trivia[]

  • In The Mask: The Animated Series season 2 episode, Flight as a Feather, his first name is Mortimer.
  • Mayor Mortimer Tilton was voiced veteran voice actor, Kevin Michael Richardson's first major voice role.
  • One possible reason for why the mayor is a completely different character in the show is that the creators of the show could not get the rights to Ivory Ocean's likeness.
  • Unlike his movie counterpart who was bald and had facial hair, Mortimer Tilton is clean-shaven and has a ring of hair on his head as well as a red vest under his coat and a long green tie around his neck as opposed to a short red tie like Mitchel Tilton in the movie.
