Mayor Mask is the tenth episode of The Mask: The Animated Series.

Summary[]

Frustrated by Edge City's mismanagement, Stanley puts on the Mask hoping he will teach Mayor Tilton a lesson. Instead, The Mask announces his candidacy against Mayor Tilton as the new mayor of Edge City. Though Stanley naturally objects, he is then forced to make sure his alter ego wins the election when he discovers the real Mayor Tilton was captured and that Dr. Pretorius is masquerading as him so he can turn all of Edge City into subjects for toxic waste experiments.

Plot[]

Election day is coming and Mayor Tilton is advertising his re-election campaign but Stanley has no reason to be excited about it. Taxes are rising, garbage is piling up next to his home, he gets robbed by an armed thief, a police officer gives him a ticket for parking next to an expired parking meter that was only installed moments ago, and he needs to pay $200 just to renew Milo's dog license. Stanley thinks he could do a much better job as Mayor than Tilton ever could, but quickly changes his mind and just decides to complain to Tilton personally. He puts on the Mask and goes to the City Hall, where Tilton is showing off his newest statue. The Mask does indeed become a candidate for mayor, however, and audiences respond positively to his proposals to improve the city.

The next day, Stanley is frustrated to learn that the Mask is running for mayor and fears what could happen to the city if the Mask was to be elected, which is why he asks Milo to hide the Mask and keep Stanley from wearing it, no matter how much he pleads or begs for it. After his work shift is over, however, Stanley gets kidnapped by thugs disguised as garbage disposal workers, who bring him to the City Hall so Mayor Tilton can have a talk to him. Once they meet, however, Tilton reveals himself to be a robot controlled by Pretorius, who has kidnapped the real Tilton and turned City Hall into his newest headquarters. He explains that he wants Tilton to be re-elected so that Pretorius can use him into selling the entire city to international corporations that will use it as a dumping ground for toxic waste. Pretorius wants to analyze the radioactive properties of toxic waste to create a race of mutant slaves loyal only to him.

Since Pretorius can't risk the Mask becoming mayor, he wants to turn Stanley into a mutant but Stanley escapes and returns home. He begs Milo to give him the Mask but Milo, remembering that Stanley told him not to give him the Mask in the first place, refuses and Stanley is forced to find it himself before Pretorius breaks into his apartment. As the Mask and Pretorious fight, a filming crew catches a glimpse of the action and local newspapers interpret this fight as the Mask attacking an elected official, which causes public opinion to turn against the Mask.

As much as he doesn't want the Mask to become mayor, Stanley knows he can't let Pretorius turn the city into a toxic wasteland, which is why he works with Peggy and Milo to improve the Mask's reputation, with Stanley himself serving as campaign manager. Their efforts are successful and the Mask gets the majority of votes, but instead of taking office, the Mask exposes Tilton as a robot controlled by Pretorius. Angry that his plans have been foiled, Pretorius decides to forcibly dump toxic waste all over the city but the Mask stops him.

After Pretorius has been defeated, authorities find the real Tilton, who decides to vote for himself, bringing the electoral race to a tie. Now, the only person who hasn't voted yet is Stanley himself. Tilton begs Stanley to vote for him and Stanley agrees, on a few conditions, such as the removal of garbage, the dissolution of dog licenses and the approval of limbo parties.

Trivia[]

  • This episode shows how much loved and well-liked The Mask really is, as he shows his politeness, his kind and good heart, and his charismatic charm to everyone else, to the point he ends up winning in the polls, because of his promises to take care of the mismanagement in Edge City, to the point that even Mrs. Peenman votes for him as Mayor because of it. Though he briefly loses his popularity because of him attacking Pretorius twice while he was still disguised as Mayor Tilton, he manages to get back on track thanks to Stanley, Peggy and Milo's help, along with steaming up other people's trousers that also helps as well.
