Son of the Mask

Son of the Mask is a 2005 American fantasy family-comedy film, directed by Lawrence Guterman, director of Cats & Dogs, starring Jamie Kennedy as Tim Avery, an aspiring cartoonist from Fringe City who has just had his first child born with the powers of the Mask. It is the stand-alone sequel to the successful 1994 film The Mask, an adaptation of Dark Horse Comics which starred Jim Carrey.

It also stars Alan Cumming as the god of mischief, Loki, whom Odin has ordered to find the Mask. It co-stars Traylor Howard, Kal Penn, Steven Wright, with Bob Hoskins as Odin and Bear as Otis. Ben Stein makes a brief reappearance within the first few minutes of the film as Dr. Arthur Neuman from The Mask to reestablish the relationship with the mask and Loki Mask Of The Dragon Ragnarok threequel Of The Mask,

Plot[]

11 years after the first film, Dr. Arthur Neuman (Ben Stein) is giving a tour of the hall of Norse mythology in the Edge City Museum on a stormy night as a man in black comes in to view the hall. Dr. Neuman tells the story of Loki, the God of Mischief, who created the mask and unleashed it on Earth to spread his mischief. Those who wear it are imbued with the powers of Loki. When Dr. Neuman also mentions Odin's punishment and imprisonment of Loki, the stranger becomes furious and transforms, revealing himself to be Loki (Alan Cumming). The tourists panic and flee, but Dr. Neuman stays to argue with the angry god. Loki takes the mask from the display, only to realize it is a replica. In anger he removes Dr. Neuman's still talking face from his body and puts it on the mask's stand before dispatching security and storming out of the museum in a whirlwind of rage.

Meanwhile, the next day, the real mask makes its way to Fringe City, not far from Edge City, and is found in a creek by a dog named Otis, who belongs to Tim Avery, an aspiring cartoonist at an animation company, who is feeling reluctant to accept parenthood with his wife, Tonya. His job involves him dressing up as a tour guide called Torpedo Tortoise and working alongside his best friend Jorge (who is very shy and nervous around women), while desperately trying to pitch an idea of a cartoon to his boss, Daniel Moss, only to be turned down. On an island, Loki is relaxing until Odin confronts and orders him to continue his search for the mask, believing that the artifact has caused too much trouble for mankind. Loki asks his father to help him, however, Odin sternly tells Loki that he has to take responsibility for his own actions.

Later that night, Tim puts on the mask for a Halloween party held at the studio, transforming into am eccentric, green-faced party animal. Tim notices Jorge's crush, Sylvia standing alone in the back, eagerly confronts her, and has her stripped out of her costume and into a skimpy red bathing suit before spinning her into Jorge's arms, which pleases them both. When the company party turns out to be a bore, Tim uses his mask powers to perform a remix of "Can't Take My Eyes Off You", therefore making the party a success, and giving Moss the idea for a new cartoon, resulting in Tim's promotion the next day. Tim returns to his house that night and, while still wearing the mask, conceives a baby. The baby, Alvey, is born with the same powers as the mask, which alerts Odin. Possessing a store clerk, Odin informs Loki about this and tells him that if he finds the child, he will find the mask.

Months later, Tonya goes on a business trip, leaving Tim with their son. Tim, who has been promoted at work, desperately tries to work on his cartoon at home, but is disrupted by Alvey. In order to get some peace and quiet, Tim lets Alvey watch some cartoons. Alvey, whose intelligence has been amplified by the mask, devilishly obtains the idea to mess with his father's head by using his mask powers. Meanwhile, Otis, who has been feeling neglected by Tim because of Alvey, dons the mask by accident and becomes a crazed animal version of himself, who tries to get rid of Alvey, but all his attempts are overturned by the much craftier infant. Tim starts to notice his son and dog's wild cartoonish behavior, when Alvey starts harassing him. Eventually, Loki, after searching from home to home for the baby and leaving a trail of mayhem in his wake, finds Alvey and confronts Tim for the mask back, and is thwarted again by Alvey who uses his powers to ward him off.

Eventually, Odin, possessing Tim's body, becomes fed up with Loki's destructive approach for defying him once again (oblivious to the fact that he has Alvey in his arms) and strips his son of his powers. A seemingly deranged Tim is eventually fired after failing to impress Moss during a pitch, but he is able to reconcile and bond with Alvey. Later that night, Loki, still determined to please his father, sneaks into the Avery household and manages to summon and convince Odin to give him another chance to prove himself. Odin obliges, but warns his son that he only has one hour to retrieve the mask or else he is banished and permanently loses his powers. Loki then kidnaps Alvey in exchange for the mask, just as Tonya finally returns from her trip. After Tim explains everything, the two find Otis, still wearing the mask and upset with Tim for ignoring him. Tim is able to win him over by apologizing for not paying enough attention, and promises that he and Alvey can get along with each other. Moved, Otis agrees, allowing Tim to remove the mask from the dog. The family finds Loki and give him the mask, but Loki, having bonded with Alvey over their powers, goes back on his deal. Tim gets the mask back and dons it once again, engaging in a high-speed pursuit, and eventually confronting him in a stadium, where Tim and Loki go hand-to-hand. However, both Tim and Loki are evenly matched due to possessing equal powers, prompting Loki to halt the fight, and suggests that they let Alvey decide who he wants to go with. Although Loki tries to lure Alvey to him with toys and promises of fun, Tim wins by removing the mask and asks Alvey to come back to him using the human connection he has forged with his son, convincing Alvey to choose his parents.

Saddened and furious, Loki tries to destroy the family, but his one-hour time limit expires as Odin finally shows up in person. Having lost his patience and deeming Loki a failure, he prepares to banish him, but Tim confronts the powerful Norse god and tells him that regardless of their problems, they are still father and son. Moved by Tim's words, Odin reconciles with Loki, accepting the mask from Tim as well before the two gods return to Asgard. Some time later, Tim is rehired when his subsequent cartoon, based on his own experiences, becomes a hit, and Tonya reveals that she is pregnant again before the film closes.

Trivia[]

  • In the first movie, it is shown that Loki's mask only works at night, however, Otis the dog was seen wearing the mask during the day. This was also one thing that the animated series shared, as Stanley was seen using The Mask during the day multiple times. This would be one thing that would make The Mask of Loki slightly more like the comic, as a matter of fact, the not working during the day rule was only present in the first film, as in the comics, animated series, and this film, it could be worn anytime.
  • Ben Stein is the only returning cast member from the first film.
  • Before the release of Son of the Mask, a direct sequel to The Mask entitled The Mask II, was confirmed by Charles Russell, but after Jim Carrey turned down the role, the sequel was cancelled. However, in late 2019 there have been rumors of the sequel being back in development with Carrey reprising his role as Stanley Ipkiss. Whether it will make this film canon or non-canon is unconfirmed.
  • A notable scene in the films involves characters performing “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You” by Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. In The Mask Strikes Back #3, during an attempt to perform for a heavy metal crowd, Ben (while wielding the Mask) instead turns into a crooner who begins performing that very song.
  • The first half of the film takes place around Halloween, which brings to mind The Mask: The Hunt for Green October, in which the Mask was also found around the Halloween season.
  • The scene where Otis is dragged through the house and down the stairs by a winch, while dislodging boards as he goes, is nearly identical to a scene from the 1997 film Mouse Hunt, where the same thing happens to Caesar the exterminator.
  • Baby Alvey watches The Flintstones S05E10 The Most Beautiful Baby in Bedrock (Nov. 19, 1964).
