The Terrible Twos is the fourth episode of The Mask: The Animated Series.

Summary[]

When Kellaway tries to prove that Stanley is the Mask by handcuffing the two together, Stanley must go to elaborate lengths to get away from the detective when two mutants Putty Thing and Fish Guy (formerly two teenage slackers named Dak and Eddie who irradiated themselves so they can become superheroes) go on the rampage.

Plot[]

After yet another night of trouble caused by the Mask, Kellaway barges into Stanley's apartment and handcuffs him to himself, intending to prove once for all that Stanley and the Mask are the same person. On the way to the police station, Kellaway drives to a convenience store and finds two teenagers, Dak and Eddie, reading comic books.

Kellaway kicks Dak and Eddie out of the store, but is called to address an emergency over at the dynamite factory, bringing the handcuffed Stanley along with him. A criminal called Art Nouveau threatens to destroy the factory and cause massive damage to the city unless his demands are met.

Stanley tells Nouveau that if he sets off the dynamite in the factory, he will end up killing himself, as well. Dissuaded, Art throws away the detonator and Stanley barely manages to catch it. Unfortunately, a dynamite rod is accidentally ignited by a broken piece of cigar and Kellaway sets off to find it before it blows.

Meanwhile, Dak and Eddie, wanting to obtain superpowers to get revenge on Kellaway for not letting them read comic books, break into a nuclear power plant and infect themselves with radiation. Instead of getting superpowers, however, Dak and Eddie pass out from the radiation and are soon picked up by an ambulance.

Stanley and Kellaway are unable to catch the dynamite rod before it detonates deep beneath Edge City's sewers, causing a small earthquake that damages the ambulance transporting Dak and Eddie to the hospital. Dak and Eddie fall into a store for construction material and an aquarium and turn into a living mass of concrete and an a humanoid fish. In his new form, Dak can shapeshift and create weapons and objects with his body but Eddie is disappointed he can't do anything other than breathe air. Still, he goes along with Dak's idea of calling themselves Putty Thing and Fish Guy, the Terrible Twos. Putty Thing goes around destroying things for fun, with Fish Guy just going along for the ride.

Putty Thing and Fish Guy save Baby Forthwright, who had been separated from his mother after the explosion of the dynamite, but they are suddenly attacked by the police. Unfortunately, the police are unable to stop the Terrible Twos and Kellaway is knocked out during the ensuing fight. Realizing only the Mask can stop these new villains, Stanley is forced to drag an unconscious Kellaway back to his apartment and asks Milo to bring him the Mask, all the while protecting his secret identity.

The Mask is only capable of fighting the Terrible Twos for a few moments before having to return to Stanley's apartment and turn back into Stanley before Kellaway wakes up. As soon as Kellaway wakes up, Doyle confirms that while Stanley was handcuffed to Kellaway, the Mask was fighting the Terrible Twos, meaning that Stanley and the Mask can't be the same person. Kellaway, however, wants to see Stanley and the Mask together in the same place. Stanley is forced to distract Kellaway yet again before the Mask goes on to confront the Terrible Twos.

Putty Thing recognizes Kellaway as the cop that wouldn't let him and Fish Guy read their comic books and attempts to smash him with his mallet hand, but the Mask threatens to cook Fish Guy unless Putty Thing releases Kellaway. Putty Thing begrudgingly agrees and lets the cop go. Then, the Mask defeats Putty Thing by dousing him in canola oil, which causes him to lose his elastic abilities and he melts into a puddle. The Mask then traps Putty Thing in a jar and finally stops the Terrible Twos. Kellaway begrudgingly thanks the Mask for saving him and admits that maybe the Mask isn't such a bad guy, after all. The Mask, in his usual goofy self, gives Kellaway a wedgie, causing an angry Kellaway to chase after the Mask and forget about Stanley for now.

Trivia[]

Jim Cummings was the voice of Art Nouveau in this episode. Jim Cummings was also the voice of Kablamus, another villain in the show. Also, Nouveau’s voice sounds similar to the Disney Afternoon character Bonkers Bobcat, who was also voiced by Cummings.

The Mask shows just how smart he is, as he hears howling from Milo, which he translates it in a book that translates everything including animal, that tells him Kellaway is waking up, which The Mask at first doesn't understand why he should go back to Kellaway, then he remembers why he needs to do that, because if Kellaway wakes up and not see Stanley with him, then Kellaway arrests Stanley and possibly put him in prison, leaving The Mask to no longer exist, so he goes back to save himself and Stanley as well, since he cares about him and loves him like a little brother. He goes back and forth anytime when Kellaway gets too close to finding out, showing just how smart and clever The Mask really is, despite being a cartoonish, genuine madman.
